Heinkel 162 - (scan - 1996)

The Heinkel 162 has an amazing story. It went from concept to mockup to flying prototype in less than 90 days! It is the quintessential Nazi desperation weapon. Hermann Goering and his cronies were the "brains" behind this project. They wanted a small, light, high-speed interceptor built of non-strategic materials (wood) and planned to train hordes of Hitler youth to fly them!

The amazing thing is that it flew at all, more amazing that it flew well. The design itself was sound, the plane performed very well in the hands of an experienced pilot. It was not for beginners, however, and the plan to put low-time wide-eyed Hitler youth in them was ridiculous.
