North American F-100 Super Sabre - (scan - 1997)
The F-100 First USAF supersonic operational fighter.  63440
was in last block of Ds and accepted 19 Dec 57.  After over 20 years of
service with 5 different wings of active AF--including 5-year combat tour in
VN--and 6 years with Michigan ANG, "440" transferred 1978.  Sustained at least
6 hits in SEA, flown through tops of trees on a strafing pass, and had right
main landing gear collapse on landing at Itazuke AFB.  At one time, assigned
to Maj (later B/G) Robbie Risner, first winner of Air Force Cross in SEA and a
senior POW in North VN.  Unit assignments:
