Also, exhaust suppressors helped further to "hide" aircraft. Upper powered turret with 4 guns could be fixed to fire with the belly-mounted guns. Initially, turret caused some control problems and was removed from some aircraft. Problems resolved later and turrets replaced. P- 61 was immediate success; 6 Jun-24 Aug 44, credited with 239 German aircraft destroyed and another 209 probables; none lost to enemy action. Excellent handling aircraft; could turn inside most first-line US fighters. After war, used for non-military weather research. Night-fighter versions of P-82 replaced it in active inventory.
