Ordered in 1939, the Grumman Avenger was built to replace the obsolete TBD Devastator torpedo bomber. Despite being an improvement over the Devastator, the Avenger took a beating in its combat debut—five out of six Avengers were lost at the Battle of Midway. Despite its inauspicious beginning, it would go on to serve a distinguishing career and would remain in foreign military service until 1962. Retiring from military service, Avengers served as aerial tankers for fighting forest fires and reached blazes in areas that were not accessible to firefighters on the ground. Read More ... | ||||
