The He 51 was a conventional biplane fighter, which made its first flight in May 1933, but was outdated the day it entered service. It was flown by the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and allowed Luftwaffe pilots to gain valuable experience before World War II. However, when matched against Soviet "volunteers" flying Polikarpov I-16s, it was no contest and the I-16 flew rings around the Heinkel.
