---|---|---|---|
Introduced in 1953, the Piasecki YH-16 Transporter was a twin-rotor, heavy lift helicopter with a capacity of 47 troops or 38 stretchers and 5 attendants. A fatal crash of the second prototype in 1956, brought the project to an end and with it the cancellation of a 69-seat airliner version of the design. The cause of the crash was later determined to be the aft slip ring bearings that seized causing a failure of the rotor shaft, which led to the aft blades and forward blades desynchronizing and colliding with each other. Only two prototypes were built. | |||
