The biggest event of the 1929 National Air Races was the unlimited "free-for-all race."
Pilot Doug Davis completed the 10 mile, 5 lap course at an average speed of 194.9 mph, beating the US Army and Navy's best pursuit planes.
The shock waves, caused by the defeat of the military aircraft entered in the race, would result in the total eclipse of the biplane in the military.
