The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress is a 1944 documentary 16 mm color film which provides an account of the final mission of the crew of the B-17 Memphis Belle. In May 1943 it became the third US Army Air Forces heavy bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe, but the first to return to the United States. The film was made as a morale-building inspiration for the Home Front showing the everyday courage of the men who manned these bombers. | |
Conquest of the Air is a 1936 London Films documentary of the history of aviation. It was commissioned by the British Air Ministry and covers the beginning of flight and ends with the early stages of World War II. The film features historical footage, dramatic re-creations of commercial and military aviation. It starts with the beginning of flight and includes the early stages of technology developments in design, propulsion, and air navigation aids. The film primarily promotes Britain's contribution and leadership in aviation during this period. Some notable footage is featured of the early phases of automated flight, navigational equipment, and the transitions between civil and military developments, including heavy bombers; fast fighter aircraft; and the advent of naval aviation (aircraft carrier), plus the initial experiments with vertical rotary flight (helicopters). An updated version was released in the United States on May 20, 1940. |
